Tiger Woods insistent not to let it go

Tiger Woods insistent not to let it go

Tiger Woods is in no mood to let the trophy of Chevron World Challenge slip out of his showcase, especially when it can add some glitter to his winless season.
The 34-year-old is adamant with his plans and it is evident from his last two rounds, which turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Tiger smashed 65 in the first round on a loss of 1 hole and 66 in the second with perfect scorecard.
Woods holds a record of at least one PGA Tour title in every year ever since he turned professional in 1996. Although his winning streak has been cracked with the terrible start of 2010, but chances are that he will cap it with a title at 18-man invitational Chevron World Challenge.
It has been a turbulent season for the world number two, who lost all his titles as well his wife, owing to the case of infidelity. Despite of the heavy blow, the world’s richest athlete claims he has not lost his drives.
Tiger said, “My goal is to win every tournament I tee it up in and be prepared for every event. I love winning. That is just fun. Coming down the stretch on the back nine with a chance to win, I mean, that’s the rush and that’s the thrill of why my practice, and it’s why we train, why we hit all those balls tireless hours is to put ourselves in that one position. Whether you succeed or fail, it is about being there, and once you get a taste of that, you want to be there time and time again.”
Woods may not have won any event in the current year, but his play has come a long way since missing the cut at the Quail Hollow Championship and finishing second last at the Bridgestone Invitational. Moreover, he changed his swings thrice and hired the services of Sean Foley. By the end of the year, the veteran got the fruit of his hard work and finished fourth in the JB Were Masters, where he wrapped the last round with a 65.
After smashing a bogey free round on Friday in California Tiger told the press that he learnt a lot as a golfer and as a person. He further added that the year might have been painful, but it has been very successful as he taught him control and persistence.

Steven Gerrard Set To Face Cottagers

Steven Gerrard Set To Face Cottagers

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will not be fit to play in Saturday's match at Newcastle but is on course for a return the following weekend.
The 30-year-old is still recovering from a hamstring injury sustained on England duty last month and will not travel to St James' Park with the rest of the squad.
"I don't know where the stories came from that Gerrard would be fit for Newcastle," said manager Roy Hodgson.
"We have always been thinking he would be fit to face Fulham the following weekend, it would be much too early to consider him for Newcastle.
"But he is making very good progress, which we are happy with, and he is absolutely on schedule but Newcastle was an unrealistic target."
Hodgson also revealed he had challenged defender Daniel Agger to prove his fitness for the match at Anfield against the Cottagers.
The Denmark centre-back has not played since September 25 because of a calf problem.
Liverpool's medical staff believe he needs a couple more weeks' rehabilitation but Hodgson and Agger are both pushing for a return in 10 days' time.
"He is much better and really pushing himself beyond what we could expect him to do," added the Reds boss.
"His attitude is first class and we are targeting the Fulham game.
"The sports science people tell me it is too soon and he needs a bit longer but in my conversations with him he is in agreement that Fulham is not out of the question and he is pushing for it."

We Can Win At Old Trafford - Theo Walcott

We Can Win At Old Trafford - Theo Walcott

Theo Walcott would love to show Barcelona just what Arsenal can do should they meet again in the Champions League next year - but knows Arsene Wenger's men must now concentrate on delivering a top performance at Old Trafford.
The Gunners secured their place in the last 16 of Europe's elite competition once again with a somewhat laboured 3-1 win over Group H whipping boys Partizan Belgrade at Emirates Stadium, ending the game with 10 men after Bacary Sagna's late dismissal.
However, as they could only finish runners-up to Shakhtar Donetsk - whom they had thrashed 5-1 at home earlier in the qualifying campaign - Arsenal will not be among the seeds for the knockout stage draw which takes place in Nyon, Switzerland next Friday.
Given domestic rivals Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham all won their respective groups, that means the Barclays Premier League leaders will now face either of Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid or one from German duo Bayern Munich and Schalke.
Walcott was part of the Arsenal team ripped open by Lionel Messi in their quarter-final second leg in the Nou Camp during April, where the England forward had put the visitors ahead.
While Walcott feels were the two sides to face off again it would be a very different prospect, the 21-year-old accepts focus must first be on getting a positive result from their top-of-the-table domestic showdown with United on Monday night.
"If you want to be the best, you have to play the best," said Walcott, who came off the bench against Partizan to make his 150th Arsenal appearance and give the Gunners a 2-1 lead with a well-taken second-half goal before in-form Samir Nasri netted a third.
"We want to go that one step further - if we do get Barcelona, we don't want Messi to do what he did to us last season.
"I would love to go back there and show them what we are all about this season.
"We want to win silverware for the fans because they have waited too long.
"We have improved - new personnel have come in and we have players coming back from injury soon.
"It doesn't matter to us, we will play anyone and try to win the game."
Walcott knows getting the better of Sir Alex Ferguson's men at Old Trafford will be no easy task, despite Arsenal's impressive away form.
"United have not lost in the league yet, so hopefully we can be the first to do that," he said.
"They are not playing the best, but these are the games where they will step up. Yet if they are not playing well and still are second in the league, then we don't want to catch them on a good day.
"But we have just got to go there and play with no fear, express ourselves and then the best performance will come out.
"We need to get something there and the way we are playing away from home, we can beat anyone."
It remains to be seen whether captain Cesc Fabregas will have recovered from his latest hamstring injury to face the Red Devils, with the Spain midfielder insisting he would take no risks by coming back too soon.
Left-back Kieran Gibbs badly twisted his ankle last night, leaving Emirates Stadium on crutches, and the England international faces another frustrating spell on the sidelines.
Wenger could elect to hand Robin van Persie a second successive start at Old Trafford after the Dutchman - back to match fitness following his own ankle problems - produced an impressive display against Partizan, scoring a first goal of the season from the penalty spot.

Sepp Blatter: Just Get Over It, England!

Sepp Blatter: Just Get Over It, England!

Brazen Fifa chief Sepp Blatter has slammed English football as “bad losers” over the 2018 World Cup stitch-up.
The Swiss head of the global game has come under sustained fire from England, the USA and Australia over last week’s Zurich carve-up which handed Russia the 2018 World Cup and sent the 2022 tournament to oil-rich Qatar.
But rather than acknowledging the damage done to Fifa by the behaviour of its executive committee members, including the seven who promised England bid members including Prince William and Prime Minister David Cameron of their support and then reneged, Blatter launched into an attack on the defeated candidates.
Blatter, who had strongly supported the Russian bid, said: “To be honest, I was surprised by all the English complaining after the defeat. England, of all people, the motherland of fair play ideas.
“Now some of them are showing themselves to be bad losers. You can’t come afterwards and say so and so promised to vote for England. The results are known. The outcome came out clearly.”
Blatter and Fifa’s handling of the entire bid process has been condemned globally after the bids ranked the best technically and economically were routed, while Russia and Qatar, who fared poorly in the official study and in the report on financial viability for international management consultants McKinsey triumphed.
FA bid leaders including chief executive Andy Anson branded the process “a waste of time” and suggested Blatter should have saved them the bother of competing when he was determined to take the tournament to new territories.
Blatter reinforced the impression that the vote had been deliberately skewed as he accused critics of the Qatar win of racism, adding: “I really sense in some reactions a bit of the arrogance of the western world of Christian background.
“Some simply can’t bear it if others get a chance for a change. What can be wrong if we start football in regions where this sport demonstrates a potential which goes far beyond sport?”
And despite the evidence of recent months - and the looming probe into Fifa and other international sports organisations promised by the Swiss government - Blatter insisted: “There is no systematic corruption in Fifa. That is nonsense.
“We are financially clean and clear. But we need to improve our image. We also need to clarify some things within Fifa.”

Defender Carlos Marchena: Villarreal's Squad Is Hugely Competitive

Defender Carlos Marchena: Villarreal's Squad Is Hugely Competitive

Villarreal defender Carlos Marchena has professed that the team are enjoying a superb start to the season because the competition for first team places is proving excellent motivation.
The former Valencia and Benfica stopper arrived at El Madrigal in the close season, and has been a pivotal figure as the Yellow Submarines have surged to third spot in the table.
In a press conference this afternoon, the World Cup winner spoke of the squad, and how he feels the club have performed so far this season.
He remarked: “In this squad there are at least 15 starters, and this is being demonstrated regularly. It is good to have such competitiveness. We must however so step by step, because there are still many points to play for, and nothing is definitive at this point of the season.
“We have a lot of humility, respect and ambition to keep going on our current form, that allows us to be third in the standings.”
Marchena also spoke of competing with Barcelona and Real Madrid, adding: “We always look upwards, but obviously Barca and Real Madrid are very strong and it is very difficult to compete with them.”
Finally, he mentioned the possibility of teammate Joan Capdevila sealing a new contract with the team, concluding: “Joan is a key part of the squad in recent years, and it would be great news if he were to renew."

Dani Alves: I Would Never Leave Barcelona For Real Madrid

Dani Alves: I Would Never Leave Barcelona For Real Madrid

Barcelona contract rebel Dani Alves has stated that if he were ever to leave the Catalan giants, Real Madrid would not be an option he would consider.
The Brazilian full-back’s contract expires in the summer of 2012, but despite protracted negotiations over an extension, he has yet to reach an agreement, claiming that the club have undervalued him.
Manchester City are on alert should he decide his future lies away from Camp Nou, but in an interview with TV station Cuatro, he maintained that Madrid would not be a possibility, although he added that he would one day like to work alongside Los Blancos coach Jose Mourinho.
He commented: “I would not play in Madrid. If I leave Barca, I would not go there. My Madrid train has passed.
“Jose Mourinho is a great coach, I would really like to work with him, and I once came close. He knows what weapons to use against teams, and he has won everything.”

Chelsea Defender Jose Bosingwa Ruled Out Of Tottenham Clash

Chelsea Defender Jose Bosingwa Ruled Out Of Tottenham Clash

Chelsea defender Jose Bosingwa has been ruled out of the club's Premier League clash against Tottenham this Sunday.
The Portugal international limped out of the club's 1-0 defeat to Marseille in the Champions League on Wednesday night with a hamstring injury.
Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti confirmed: "Bosingwa has a hamstring problem, so he's not available for the next game."
Boswinga's place is likely to be taken by fellow Portugal player Paulo Ferreira, who replaced him in last week's 1-1 draw against Everton at Stamford Bridge.
But England midfielder Frank Lampard will be given until the last minute to prove his fitness ahead of the weekend game.

Alejandro Sabella Proud Of Estudiantes Players After River Plate Demolition

Alejandro Sabella Proud Of Estudiantes Players After River Plate Demolition

Estudiantes coach Alex Sabella revealed that he was proud of his players, after the Pincha destroyed River Plate 4-0 in the Monumental to leave themselves on the brink of the Apertura title.
Goals from Leandro Desabato, Marcos Rojo, Matias Sanchez and Gabriel Mercado sealed an incredible victory for Estudiantes away from home, and was the first time the La Plata club had won by such an imposing margin in the Monumental against the Nunez giants. Estudiantes now need only to match rivals Velez Sarsfield's result on Sunday to win the Apertura, and Sabella struggled for words to describe the quality of the performance.
"The only thing you can do with these players, as I have always said, is stand up and applaud. For all they have been doing for themselves and for the club. Now everyone is talking about Estudiantes and that is the best recognition possible," Sabella stated in Wednesday night's post-match press conference.
"We kept our concentration and order throughout the game. The team played a fantastic match and when we had the chances we made sure we took them".
Estudiantes enjoy a two-point lead over Velez going into Sunday's title decider. The Pincha host third placed Arsenal de Sarandi, while Velez must travel to Avellaneda to take on fourth placed Racing Club

Kolo Toure Could Return For Man City Against West Ham

Kolo Toure Could Return For Man City Against West Ham

Manchester City could have Kolo Toure back for their game against West Ham United.
Scans revealed that the defender's calf sustained no serious damage after he limped out of the 1-0 win against Bolton Wanderers last weekend.
"I felt tightness in my calf so as a precaution I came off, but it’s not looking as bad as we first thought and I’m hoping I will be available for selection for West Ham on Saturday," Toure told the club's official website.
“Obviously if there is even the slightest doubt, I will maybe rest it for a few more days, but as things stand, it’s not looking too bad.”
The Ivory Coast international has been in good form this season ,alongside centre-back partner Vincent Kompany. And he expects West Ham, and future games, to be tough as the club look to win the Premier League.
"It’s going to be a tough game, but Upton Park is a ground I’ve always enjoyed playing at," he said.
“It should be a good game and we will be looking to extend our unbeaten run to eight games.
"The consistency is coming, but we still need to take each game as it comes and not think that because we are playing the team at the bottom of the table that things will be easier.
"In fact, I think the wins will be harder to come by because we are riding high near the top and the teams we play will be more cautious and treat us a bigger scalp
"We need to keep doing what we’ve been doing in the last month and be more focused than ever."

Eintracht Frankfurt Looking To Loan Defender After Marco Russ Injury

Eintracht Frankfurt Looking To Loan Defender After Marco Russ Injury

With the news that centre-back Marco Russ will be require a knee operation, Eintracht Frankfurt look set to raid the transfer market next month in search of a replacement.
The 25-year old defender has been plagued with a meniscus problem since the start of the season.
"It could be quite a serious injury, which will keep him out for a long time. We would like to bring in a central defender on loan but we would rather not buy as the injured players will return sooner or later," sporting director Heribert Bruchhagen told Kicker.
One possible name that has been mentioned is 24-year old defender Nikola Petkovic, who is on loan from Eintracht at Russian side Tom Tomsk and his ability to also fill-in at left-back appeals to coach Michael Skibbe.
Russ is not the only injured defender at the club with Maik Franz and Chris suffering with abdominal and spine problems respectively. In the short term, Skibbe may well turn to Ricardo Clark for Saturday's trip to FC Koeln.
